Commemorated annually on June 5, World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The UN uses this important date to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action. The day's agenda is to:
- Give a human face to environmental issues;
- Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;
- Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
- Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
This year's host country is Mexico, which reflects the growing role of the Latin American country in the fight against climate change. Dow has played a significant role on Mexico's sustainability stage over the years, including participation in this year's World Environment Day celebration:
- Last week, Dow in Mexico received the Responsible Care Award given by the Chemical National Association, ANIQ (Asociación Nacional de la Industria Química) in Mexico.
- The Dow Chemical Company, Wal-Mart, and Grupo Ravi are proving to be the perfect fit for an ecological sandal launch.
- In the State of Tlaxcala, Dow is making history in a partnership to become the first "Clean Industrial Park" in the country.
- For the second year, Dow in Mexico received the 2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Award by CEMEFI (Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía).
- For over a decade, Dow has embraced and advocated Responsible Care® - a voluntary industry-wide commitment to safely handle our chemicals from lab inception to ultimate disposal.
